The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)

Updated: Oct 18, 2024

Eminem, 2024

Although I'm not a fan of pop culture, it gradually becomes a classic, a title well-deserved by the work of Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known by his alias Eminem. The Artist's Alter Ego album is a feast for the ears, rich with references to the greatest hits, absurdities of today's times, and as a dessert, squeezing tears from the eyes.

The first two tracks introduce us to a danceable rhythm; after fifteen seconds, it's impossible not to move. We're listening to this in the parking lot outside My Friend's favourite store. S. is inside, M. and I are eating ice cream and drinking tonic in the back seats, and R. is behind the wheel looking tired. I'm in a wet swimsuit, finding solace in the air conditioning; outside, it's the usual 30 degrees. My ice cream is almond with chocolate sauce, and the tonic is a fusion of pink pomegranate and peppermint leaves. I love pomegranates. Five minutes after leaving the water, the swimsuit is dry. We mock pronouns, reference racism, and homophobia. It amuses me greatly, yet brings a smile of quiet satisfaction. Not only do I think pronouns are stupid. Eminem doesn't like them either.
